FairVote MN Launches Voter Outreach & Education in Minneapolis
Friends of FairVote Minnesota had a busy DFL caucus night in Minneapolis April 16, visiting more than 100 precincts to remind caucusgoers about Ranked Choice Voting, distribute informational flyers and answer questions. We were impressed by the strong turnout in many wards!
While we couldnt spend time in every caucus, the night was a fun and lively kickoff to our 2013 voter education and outreach effort. Well be working hard over the next several months to make sure every voter is prepared to use RCV this Nov. 5.
Minneapolis rolled out RCV in 2009 after voters approved the switch in 2006. The implementation was a huge success, with 95 percent of polled voters reporting they found it easy to use. This will be the first time the city has used RCV for a wide-open mayoral contest with multiple contenders; many observers have already noted a perceptibly civil, substantive tone in the race.
Voters will also elect representatives to the City Council, Park Board and Board of Estimate and Taxation.
Huge thanks to the more than 50 volunteers and caucus conveners who helped start the education process! Were so grateful for your engagement and your commitment to democracy and we look forward to seeing you again soon!
Ward, City Convention Volunteers Needed Join the Fun!
If you joined us on caucus night or have helped us with tabling in the past you know what a blast it is talking to smart, engaged voters about the many benefits of Ranked Choice Voting. And if you havent . . . well, weve got lots of upcoming opportunities for you to find out!
Whether youre a veteran volunteer, a newer supporter, or someone whos been wanting to help for a while but hasnt yet had a chance, we need you now! Were seeking volunteers for every Saturday between now and the June 15 DFL Minneapolis city convention.
Each week until then, wards throughout the city will be holding DFL ward conventions at which the party will endorse candidates for city council. If you can spare just a couple hours on a Saturday morning to staff a FairVote Minnesota table, distribute informational lit and chat with convention-goers about RCV, wed love to hear from you! Its a great way to connect with other smart, civic-minded Minnesotans. Well provide a short training for new volunteers.
Its fun, easy, inspiring and youll be done in plenty of time to enjoy the spring sunshine (should it ever appear)! Let us know when you can help. Thanks, friends, for all you do to improve our democracy.
