Hopkins City Council holds over charter amendment

The Hopkins City Council met on January 17, 2006, for a public hearing on the proposed charter amendment to use Instant Runoff Voting for city elections. Fran Hesch, who chaired the city-sponsored Alternative Voting Task Force and the Charter Commission, gave a presentation about the voting method and the process that led to the charter amendment proposal. Several members of the community spoke during the hearing.

A vote to adopt the amendment could have been taken after the hearing. However, Council member Bruce Rowan expressed reservations and wished to investigate the issue further before voting. The Council voted to continue the public hearing in March. In the meantime, a working session of the council is being planned. A unanimous vote of the council is required to adopt the charter amendment this way.
