Your View: IRV Would Be a Plus

By Roy Srp, Waseca

“We, the people, in order to form a more perfect Union.” “We the people” — us — has not changed for well over 200 years. “To form a more perfect Union” needs to be changing all the time.

I believe the founding fathers planned it that way. This union of ours can never and will never, be perfect — but it will keep changing and that is good.

Our state can continue to be progressive and a leader by promoting change as well. That change could and should be instant runoff voting, or IRV.

Our Legislature holds the power to make that happen. They, as a body, are not in favor of it, and it will take us, and pressure from us, to make it happen.

In a nutshell, IRV allows us — the voters — to make a second or third choice in an election. This means if our first choice does not win with a majority, then it will be our second choice counted to see if that person gets a majority, etc.

It is that simple. This would virtually eliminate recounts, the contention between candidates (a spirit of decorum), which makes ads less obnoxious, the obscene amounts of cash spent unnecessarily, and gets someone elected by the majority.

That’s the way a great democracy like ours should work. Just to be sure I have described IRV accurately, more precise information is at fairvotemn.org.

Let our state delegation know you support it, and it’s good for the state. It’s the only way it will happen.
