State Ranked Choice Voting Issues Group Updates

The Secretary of State's office has launched a statewide taskforce called the Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) Issues Group, to help jumpstart implementation efforts in Minneapolis and to propose legislation that sets statewide rules and standards for the conduct of Ranked Choice Voting elections and for equipment design and certification to help lower the development costs for jurisdictions purchasing RCV-compatible equipment. The taskforce will examine other municipalities' experiences, voting equipment, state statutes, voter education models and related issues.

FairVote Minnesota is a taskforce participant and will provide regular updates here on the work of the taskforce and the progress of implementation in Minneapolis.

The taskforce is expected to meeting monthly, with specific tasks delegated to subcommittees. The first subcommittee, called the Technical Committee, has formed and is meeting weekly to review election-related statutes, draft rules and procedures for Instant Runoff Voting and review implementation options for Minneapolis. Stay tuned for an update on this work of this group in late August or early September.

The City of Minneapolis Elections Department also provides updates on the Department’s RCV implementation efforts.
