Fairvote Minnesota will be presenting to the Chaska Discussion Group on the growing movement for Ranked Choice Voting in Minnesota and across the nation.
Ranked Choice Voting is a simple change to the ballot that lets voters rank their preferences on the ballot, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, choice, etc. These rankings are used to conduct an instant runoff to ensure the candidate with the most support wins. Used in Minneapolis, St. Paul and St. Louis Park in Minnesota and in several cities around the country as well as the state of Maine for state level elections, RCV is growing rapidly as a structural reform as a response to our nation’s political polarization and dysfunction. It is shown to increase choice for voters, ensure winners with a majority of support, require candidates to reach beyond their base for second-choice votes, make campaigns more civil, and level the playing field for all candidates by eliminating the spoiler dynamic.
Fairvote Minnesota is the state’s leading organization on Ranked Choice Voting. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that promotes electoral systems that are more representative, inclusive and participatory.
